BOKHARA COUCHING STITCH STAGGERED VARIATION
BOKHARA COUCHING STITCH DIAGONAL VARIATION
The Bokhara Couching Stitch is similar to the trammed upright gobelin stitch. The difference lies in the placement of the vertical stitches. There are three basic types of bokhara couching stitches; the bokhara couching stitch, the diagonal bokhara couching stitch and the staggered bokhara couching stitch. All three variations of this stitch create a woven pattern. The foundation stitch (also known as the laid stitch) is the horizontal stitch over which all of the vertical stitches are worked. The foundation stitch may be any length you choose. These couching stitches are suitable for filling in small areas and backgrounds. When complete, the bokhara couching stitches create a "woven look". For an more interesting effect, try experimenting with different colors for the foundation and vertical stitches.
Bokhara Couching Stitch - Diagram 1:
Bring the needle up at A, move to the right over eight canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. This creates the foundation (aka laid) stitch. Bring the needle up at C, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at J. This completes the first bokhara couching stitch. Now, continue on to diagram 2...
Bokhara Couching Stitch - Diagram 2:
Beginning where we left off at J, start a new bokhara couching stitch by bringing the needle up at K, move to the right over eight canvas threads, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at O, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at R. This completes the second bokhara couching stitch. As you can see from diagram 2, the second bokhara couching stitch is worked into the bottom of the first bokhara couching stitch.
Bokhara Couching Stitch (Diagonal Variation) Diagram 1:
Bring the needle up at A, move to the right over fourteen canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at K, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at L. This completes the first part of the diagonal bokhara couching stitch. As you can see from the diagram, the spacing is not the same as the regular bokhara couching stitch. The reason will become clear as we continue working the stitch. Now, continue on to diagram 2...
Bokhara Couching Stitch (Diagonal Variation) Diagram 2:
Beginning where we left off at L, bring the needle up at M, move to the right over fourteen canvas threads, bring the needle down at N. This creates the second foundation (aka laid) stitch. Bring the needle up at O, move up over two canvas threads (crossing over the previous bokhara couching stitch), bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at R. Bring the needle up at S, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at T. Bring the needle up at U, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at V. This completes the second part of the diagonal bokhara couching stitch. Now, continue on to diagram 3...
Bokhara Couching Stitch (Diagonal Variation) Diagram 3:
Beginning where we left off at V, bring the needle up at W, move to the right over fourteen canvas threads, bring the needle down at X. This creates the third foundation (aka laid) stitch. Bring the needle up at Y, move up over two canvas threads (crossing over the previous bokhara couching stitch), bring the needle down at Z. Bring the needle up at AA, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at BB. Bring the needle up at CC, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at DD. Bring the needle up at EE, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at FF. This completes the third part of the diagonal bokhara couching stitch. Continue working in this manner until the area you are filling is complete. Use smaller vertical stitches (half stitches) to fill any open areas
Bokhara Couching Stitch (Staggered Variation) Diagram 1:
Bring the needle up at A, move to the right over fourteen canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. This completes the first part of the staggered bokhara couching stitch. Again, as you can see from the diagram, the spacing is not the same as the regular bokhara couching stitch. The reason will become clear as we continue working the stitch. Now, continue on to diagram 2...
Bokhara Couching Stitch (Staggered Variation) Diagram 2:
Beginning where we left off at H, bring the needle up at I, move to the right over fourteen canvas threads, bring the needle down at J. This creates the second foundation (aka laid) stitch. Bring the needle up at K, move up over two canvas threads (crossing over the previous bokhara couching stitch), bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at O, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at P. This completes the second part of the staggered bokhara couching stitch. Now, continue on to diagram 3...
Bokhara Couching Stitch (Staggered Variation) Diagram 3:
This diagram illustrates how the third part of the staggered bokhara couching stitch is worked into the second part of the staggered bokhara couching stitch. Continue working in the same manner as the previous diagrams, taking note of where each vertical stitch is placed in this diagram. Then, continue on to Diagram 4...
Bokhara Couching Stitch (Staggered Variation) Diagram 4:
This diagram illustrates shows subsequent staggered bokhara couching stitches worked into the preceding stitches. Careful placement of the vertical stitches creates a "staggered" look.
