The Flat Stitch is similar to the Scotch Stitch. This stitch is worked vertically. The flat stitch consists of groups of diagonal
stitches worked in opposite directions. This creates an interesting pattern. There is also a crossed flat stitch that creates a "leaf" look. Three diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch.
Flat Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move up and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at K, move up and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move up and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at O, move up and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, move up and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at R. Bring the needle up at S, move up and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at T. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Flat Stitch (Diagram 2):

Bring the needle up at W, move down and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at X. Bring the needle up at F, move down and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at H, move down and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down atN. Bring the needle up at J, move down and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at I, move down and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at K. Bring the needle up at G, move down and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at M. Bring the needle up at E, move down and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at O. Bring the needle up at Y, move down and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at Z. Bring the needle up at AA, move down and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at BB. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Flat Stitch (Diagram 3):
This is a sample of how four flat stitches will look when complete. Each consecutive flat stitch should be worked into the bottom or side of the previous one(s) - as seen in this diagram. When complete this stitch will form a pattern of squares.
