The Knotted Stitch is a "tied-down" stitch. It can easily be rescaled to fit your needs. This stitch is an excellent choice for a background stitch. There

In order to make this demonstration easier to follow, the long diagonal stitches are shown in light blue and the short tying stitches are shown in dark blue. Bring the needle up at C, move up and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, go up five canvas threads and move over to the right one canvas thread, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, go up five canvas threads and move over to the right one canvas thread, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at K, move up and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, go up five canvas threads and move over to the right one canvas thread, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at O, move up and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, go up five canvas threads and move over to the right one canvas thread, bring the needle down at R. Bring the needle up at S, move up and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at T. The next row would be worked into the bottom of this row.
is also another variation of this stitch, the single knotted stitch. The single knotted stitch creates a "fluffed" effect. This stitch produces a firm knot by crossing in the back. One diagram has been used to demonstrate this stitch.

Single Knotted Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle DOWN at A, follow the red arrow to the left UNDER the canvas and bring the needle up at B. Be sure to leave a small amount of yarn loose at A, as the diagram shows. From B, move the yarn to the right OVER three canvas threads and bring the needle down at C. Move the yarn UNDER the canvas to the left and bring the needle up at D. Again, leave a small amount of yarn loose at D. At this point, you will need to cut the yarn and tie a knot using the loose ends. To create a row (or rows) of this stitch work the next stitch into the same canvas hole and continue in this manner. Each row will be formed directly below the existing row, with the loose knotted yarn covering the horizontal stitch below it.
