The Montenegrin Cross Stitch is similar to the long-armed cross stitch except
Montenegrin Cross Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up 4 canvas threads and to the right across 8 canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up 4 canvas threads and to the left across 4 canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at C (yes, we were just here), move up 4 canvas threads and bring the needle down at E. This completes the first Montengrin Cross Stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Montenegrin Cross Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at E, bring the needle up at C, move up 4 canvas threads and to the right across 8 canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up 4 canvas threads and to the left across 4 canvas threads, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at G, move up 4 canvas threads and bring the needle down at H. This completes the first Montengrin Cross Stitch. Continue in this manner until the end of the row. Work all subsequent rows into the top of the previous row.
that it has vertical stitches worked into its design. It is easy to scale to any desired size and makes an excellent border. The demonstration below shows only one of many variations of this stitch. For example, the crossed stitches (A-B and C-D) could be made closer together with a longer C-D stitch, thus moving the straight stitch to the right. Play around with different variations of the Montenegrin Cross Stitch to see which one is most appealing to you. Two diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch.
