STEPPED SHEAF GROUND STITCH
aka WHEAT SHEAF STITCH
& INTERLOCKING WHEAT SHEAF STITCH
Sheaf Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, create a loop and bring the needle down at B. (You will need to hold this loop in place as you continue - difficult, but not impossible.) Bring the needle up at C, move up four canvas threads (working this stitch UNDER the A/B loop), bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up four canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, create a loop and bring the needle down at H. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Sheaf Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at H, bring the needle up at I, move to the right over one canvas intersection - pulling all of the previous stitches together - and bring the needle down at J. Now continue on to Diagram 3...
Sheaf Stitch (Diagram 3):
Beginning where we left off at J, work a second Sheaf Stitch to the left of the first sheaf stitch. This stitch should be worked in the same manner as the first stitch. The above diagram shows the placement of the second stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 4...
Sheaf Stitch (Diagram 4):
This is where we work the Cross Stitches in as filling stitches. Beginning where we left off at R, bring the needle up at S, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at T. Bring the needle up at Umove to the right over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at V. Bring the needle up at W, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at X. Bring the needle up at Y, move to the right over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at Z. Bring the needle up at AA, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at BB. Bring the needle up at CC, move to the right over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at DD. This completes the Sheaf Stitch.
Stepped Sheaf Ground Stitch (Diagram 5):
This stitch is a variation the Sheaf Stitch. It is worked in the same way, except for the placement of the stitches.
The Sheaf Stitch is very similar to the Shell Stitch. Here, however, we use Cross Stitches as filler stitches. For an interesting effect, try working
the cross stitches in a different color. We have also chosen to demonstrate the Stepped Sheaf Ground Stitch. The stepped sheaf ground stitch is also known as the wheat sheaf stitch and the interlocking wheat sheaf stitch. This stitch is identical to the sheaf stitch, except for the placement of the stitches. Multiple diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch.
