There are two types of diagonal gobelin stitches, the Slanted Gobelin
Slanted Gobelin Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at J. This completes the first row of Slanted Gobelin Stitches. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Slanted Gobelin Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at the end of the first row, we will work the second row in the opposite direction. Bring the needle up at K, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at G. Bring the needle up at L, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at M, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at C. Bring the needle up at N, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at A. Bring the needle up at O, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at P. This completes the second row of Slanted Gobelin Stitches. The next row would be worked in the same direction as the first row and so on...
ENCROACHING
SLANTED GOBELIN STITCH
aka INTERLOCKING GOBELIN STITCH
Encroaching Slanted Gobelin Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up three canvas threads and over to the right one canvas thread, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at J. This completes the first row of the Encroaching Slanted Gobelin Stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Encroaching Slanted Gobelin Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at the end of the first row (J), we will work this row in the opposite direction of the first. Bring the needle up at K, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at O, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at P. Continue in this manner until the end of the row and work the next row in the same direction as the first row...
Stitch and the Encroaching Slanted Gobelin Stitch (aka interlocking gobelin stitch). There are also Straight Gobelin Stitches. Both of the diagonal gobelin stitches may be adapted in size to suit many different types of work. Two diagrams have been used to demonstrate each of these stitches.
