The Woven Band Stitch is exactly what the name implies. It is a
series of bands (diagonal stitches) woven together. This stitch is an excellent choice for working borders and around corners. The woven band stitch is also referred to as the square plait stitch. Two diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch.
Woven Band Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up and to the right over four canvas intersections, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up and to the right over four canvas intersections, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up and to the right over four canvas intersections, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up and to the right over four canvas intersections, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move up and to the right over four canvas intersections, bring the needle down at J. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Woven Band Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at J, we will now add the next series of diagonal stitch, worked in the opposite directions. These stitches will be "woven" through the previous stitches at the red arrows illustrated in the above diagram. To make this diagram easier to follow, these stitches have been illustrated in dark blue. Bring the needle up at K, move up and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move up and to the left over three canvas intersections (do not forget to weave the needle/yarn UNDER the E/F stitch at the red arrow), bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at O, move up and to the left over five canvas intersections (do not forget to weave the needle/yarn UNDER the G/H stitch and the C/D stitch at the red arrows), bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, move up and to the left over seven canvas intersections (do not forget to weave the needle/yarn UNDER the I/J stitch, the E/F stitch and the A/B stitch at the red arrows), bring the needle down at R. Bring the needle up at S, move up and to the left over three canvas intersections (do not forget to weave the needle/yarn UNDER the G/H stitch at the red arrow), bring the needle down at T. Bring the needle up at U, move up and to the left over three canvas intersections (do not forget to weave the needle/yarn UNDER the C/D stitch at the red arrow), bring the needle down at V. Notice that instead of a long diagonal stitch here, we have worked two shorter diagonal stitches (S/T and U/V). This is because we are working the woven band stitch around a corner.
