The Closed Fly Stitch creates a "leaf" appearance, similar to the leaf stitch. The difference
between the two stitches lies in the way each one is worked. The closed fly stitch is most commonly used in embroidery, but may be used in canvas needlepoint work, as well. Besides creating leaves, this stitch may also make an interesting border stitch. Four diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch.
Closed Fly Stitch (Diagram 1):
In order to make these diagrams easier to understand, two colors (light blue and dark blue) have been used to illustrate this stitch. Bring the needle up at A, move down over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, create a loop, hold the loop in place and bring the needle down at D. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Closed Fly Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at D, continue holding down the loop that was just created. Bring the needle up at B, move down OVER the loop and over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at F, create a loop, hold the loop in place and bring the needle down at G. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Closed Fly Stitch (Diagram 3):
Beginning where we left off at G, continue holding down the loop that was just created. Bring the needle up at E, move down OVER the loop and over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, create a loop, hold the loop in place and bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at H, move down OVER the loop and over one canvas thread, bring the needle down. Now, continue on to Diagram 4...
Closed Fly Stitch (Diagram 4):
This diagram illustrates how the closed fly stitch should look when complete. Note that the subsequent looped stitches are consistent in length. It is important that these stitches be no more than three canvas threads wide on either side. Otherwise, the loops may tend to snag.
