The Star Stitch is also referred to as the Algerian Eye Stitch. The Star Stitch gets it's name from it's "star-like" appearance. You will need to choose yarn that is thin enough
Star Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move down and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move to the left over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at D, move up and to the left over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at E, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at F, move up and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at G, move to the right over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at H, move down and to the right over one canvas intersection, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at I, move down over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at B. This completes the first Star Stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Star Stitch (Diagram 2):
This diagram illustrates how a second Star Stitch should be worked into the first Star Stitch and how a second row of stitches should be worked into the first row of stitches.
Large Star Stitch (Diagram 3):
Bring the needle up at A, move down and to the left over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move to the left over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at D, move up and to the left over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at E, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at F, move up and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at G, move to the right over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at H, move down and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at I, move down over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. This completes the first Large Star Stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 4...
Large Star Stitch (Diagram 4):
This diagram illustrates how a second Large Star Stitch should be worked into the first Large Star Stitch and how a second row of stitches should be worked into the first row of stitches.

to pass through the center canvas hole eight times without distoring the canvas. This may mean that the yarn will not cover the canvas completely. If this occurs, simply add backstitches as demonstrated in Diagram 5. We will demonstrate the regular Star Stitch, followed by the Large Star Stitch on this page. There is also a similar stitch known as the Double Star Stitch. Two diagrams have been used to demonstrate each of these stitches, plus an extra diagram illustrating the large star stitch with back stitch.
